Protocol: Intravenous Therapy

INTRODUCTION:
Has become controversial for resuscitation in the trauma patient but
remains a common procedure. It should never be forgotten that the
procedure is painful and frightening (in both adults and children) and
should not be undertaken withou specific indications.
PROCEDURE:
- Indications to initiate intravenous access:
- Fluid resuscitation in hypotensive / tachycardic trauma victim.
- Fluid resuscitation in hypotensive medical patients.
- Drug administration line:
- For your immediate use.
- In anticipation of imminent IV drug administration.
- Approved techniques are:
- Peripheral
- External Jugular
- Intraosseous
- Saline Locks:
- Na Locks are acceptable for Pre-Hospital Use, when IV access in
needed without administration of fluids.
SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS/NOTES/PRECAUTIONS:
- IV attempts should be limited to 2.
- Another rescuer should attempt access after 2 unsuccessful attempts.
- Maximum attempts for AMI patient should be limited to 2, unless condition warrents additional attempts.
