Protocol: Intravenous Therapy

ILS | ALS PROTOCOL

INTRODUCTION:

Has become controversial for resuscitation in the trauma patient but remains a common procedure. It should never be forgotten that the procedure is painful and frightening (in both adults and children) and should not be undertaken withou specific indications.


PROCEDURE:

  1. Indications to initiate intravenous access:

    1. Fluid resuscitation in hypotensive / tachycardic trauma victim.
    2. Fluid resuscitation in hypotensive medical patients.
    3. Drug administration line:
      1. For your immediate use.
      2. In anticipation of imminent IV drug administration.

  2. Approved techniques are:

    1. Peripheral
    2. External Jugular
    3. Intraosseous

  3. Saline Locks:
    1. Na Locks are acceptable for Pre-Hospital Use, when IV access in needed without administration of fluids.

SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS/NOTES/PRECAUTIONS:

  1. IV attempts should be limited to 2.
  2. Another rescuer should attempt access after 2 unsuccessful attempts.
  3. Maximum attempts for AMI patient should be limited to 2, unless condition warrents additional attempts.
