Protocol: On-Line Medical Direction

Original Effective Date: 01/01/2001 | Revised Date: 01/01/2002

BLS PROTOCOL

INTRODUCTION: Consult with the emergengy physicians at GRMC when you are uncertain about a patient or plan. It does not indicate your inferiority to discuss a patient and seek guidance. If you run into a disagreement with a physician, report the discrepencies to the Service Medical Director, so he can address them with Medical Control.

PROCEDURE:
  1. When contacting the Medical Control Physician for order, it is incumbent upon the EMT to accurately report the patient's condition and physical findings to correctly communicate the patient's status. It is also important that the EMT understands or at least, has an idea, which order they are expecting/desiring. The EMT should know all of the options, which he/she has available for that particular patient's emergency, and convey those options to the Physician via radio. You may follow orders given only by Medical Control when the order meets ALL 3 of the following conditions:
    1. You have voice contact with Medical Control at GRMC. (by radio or phone)
    2. You have been given an order to administer a medication or perform a procedure inside of the New Mexico & Service Scope of Practice for the level at which you are licensed. (Refer to Service Scope of Practice)
    3. You believe that the order being given is a prudent order considering that specific patient and the specific circumstances, which you are under at the time.

SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS/NOTES/PRECAUTIONS:

If you feel you need an order that has not been offered, ask. If the answer is no, it's a good idea to discuss it with Medical Control or the Medical Director to understand their reasoning for denying the order.
