Protocol: Pneumatic Anti-Shock Garment (PASG/MAST)

BLS PROTOCOL

INTRODUCTION

Refer to SHOCK, GENERAL TRAUMA and MULTI-SYSTEM TRAUMA protocols for specific conditions indicating application.


PROCEDURE

  1. Typical Indications

    1. Lower extremity fractures.
    2. Pelvis fractures.
    3. Hypotension not related to chest trauma, heart failure, MI, ruptured diaphragm.

  2. Contraindications

    1. Supradiaphragmatic injuries (above diaphragm), particularly penetrating.
    2. Evisceration
    3. Pregnancy
    4. Open femur fracture
    5. Pulmonary edema
    6. Closed head injury

  3. Application
    1. Use standardized technique to apply PASG. Refer to Special Considerations/ /Notes/Precautions section of this protocol.


SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS/NOTES/PRECAUTIONS:

  1. Don't use scene time to apply trousers.
  2. Remove clothing under the level of PASG, or as minimum empty pockets.
