Protocol: GENERAL MEDICAL PATIENTS

BASIC LIFE SUPPORT

  1. Perform patient assessment and ABC's.
  2. Administer oxygen via a device to insure adequate patient oxygenation as necessary. Apply pulse oximetry device if appropriate, and record reading.
  3. Monitor vital signs in accordance with S.O.P. protcol.
  4. Recognize and respond promptly to any emergency difficulties.
  5. Position patient appropriately.
  6. Recognize and manage types of shock according to appropriate protocol.
  7. Continued monitoring of patient status throughout patient contact.
  8. Document a complete set of patient vital signs before and following the administration of any therapy.
  9. Communicate appropriately and effectively with patient and Medical Control when needed.
  10. Anticipate unstable conditions requiring immediate transport, ALS Intercept, and according to appropriate protcols.
  11. Consult with Medical Control concerning appropriate transport attendance.

Probably the largest segment of our practice comes from this group. Though often with vague complaints and 'non-emergency' transfers as their only entry into the EMS system, they are still due your skills and kindness.
