50% DEXTROSE
- Therapeutic Effects
- Rapidly restores blood sugar levels to normal in states of hypoglycemia.
- Acts transiently as an osmotic diuretic.
- Indications
- To treat known HYPOGLYCEMIA
- In Status Epilepticus if BGL < 60 mg/dl.
- Contraindications
- Use caution with Intracranial hemorrhage.
- Use caution with known Stroke (CVA).
- Precautions
- Assure solution has not crystallized.
- Patent IV line to avoid tissue necrosis.
- Obtain automated glucometry prior to administration if possible.
- Dose
- Adult: 25 grams of 50% dextrose slow IVP | may repeat once in 10/min PRN
- Children: 12.5 grams of 25% dextrose slow IVP (may be given IO)
- Side Effects
- Tissue necrosis if infiltration occurs
- Thrombophlebitis
