50% DEXTROSE

  1. Therapeutic Effects
    1. Rapidly restores blood sugar levels to normal in states of hypoglycemia.
    2. Acts transiently as an osmotic diuretic.

  2. Indications
    1. To treat known HYPOGLYCEMIA
    2. In Status Epilepticus if BGL < 60 mg/dl.

  3. Contraindications
    1. Use caution with Intracranial hemorrhage.
    2. Use caution with known Stroke (CVA).

  4. Precautions
    1. Assure solution has not crystallized.
    2. Patent IV line to avoid tissue necrosis.
    3. Obtain automated glucometry prior to administration if possible.

  5. Dose
    1. Adult: 25 grams of 50% dextrose slow IVP | may repeat once in 10/min PRN
    2. Children: 12.5 grams of 25% dextrose slow IVP (may be given IO)

  6. Side Effects
    1. Tissue necrosis if infiltration occurs
    2. Thrombophlebitis
