DIAZEPAM

  1. Trade Names
    1. Valium

  2. Therapeutic Effects
    1. Suppresses seizure activity in the motor cortex of the brain.
    2. Generalized central nervous system depressant.
    3. Muscle relaxant.

  3. Indications
    1. To treat Status Epilepticus
    2. to provide sedation prior to Cardioversion
    3. In very selected cases, to relieve Severe Anxiety

  4. Contraindications
    1. Should not be given during pregnancy because of possible toxic effects on the fetus.
    2. Should not be given to patients who have taken alcohol or other sedative drugs.
    3. Should not be given to patients with respiratory depression from any source.
    4. Should not be given to patients with hypotension.

  5. Side Effects
    1. Possible Hypotension
    2. Depression in the Level of Consciousness
    3. In the elderly, the very ill, and patients with pulmonary disease, may cause respiratory arrest and/or cardiac arrest.

  6. Administration and Dosage
    1. For Status Epilepticus 5 - 10 mg slow IVP
    2. For Anxiety 2.5 - 5 mg slow IVP
    3. For Cardioversion 5 - 10 mg slow IVP
