DIPHENHYDRAMINE

    1. Benadryl

  2. Therapeutic Effects
    1. Blocks Histamine Effects
    2. Reverses some untoward effects of phenothiazine tranquilizers.
    3. Inhibits motion sickness (antiemetic)
    4. Mild sedative

  3. Indications
    1. As an adjunct to epinephrine in the treatment of ANAPHYLACTIC SHOCK and SEVERE ALLERGIC REACTIONS.
    2. To treat ACUTE DYSTONIC REACTIONS caused by phenothiazines like thorazine (Compazine).
    3. In very selected cases, to relieve Severe Anxiety

  4. Contraindications/Precautions
    1. Asthma or Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (use caution)
    2. Narrow-angle glaucoma (use caution)
    3. Pregnancy
    4. Nursing mothers

  5. Side Effects
    1. Resembles those of atropine:
    2. Drowsiness, confusion
    3. Blurring of vision, Difficulty in urination, Dry mouth, wheezing, HA, Palpitations

  6. Administration and Dosage
    1. Adult: 25-50 mg IV or Deep IM
    2. Peds: 1mg/kg IV or Deep IM
