Glucagon
- Therapeutic Effects
- Hormone - hyperglycemic agent
- Indications
- Documented symptomatic hypoglycemia (BGL < 60mg/dl) when an IV cannot be established.
- Beta Blocker overdose with serious signs and symptoms (ALS)
- Anaphylaxis refractory to epinephrine, or in patients who have history of serious coronary artery disease.(ALS)
- Contraindications/Precautions
- Patients who will be unable to receive supplemental glucose orally, IV, or rectally after administration of glucagon.
- Hypersensitivity to pork and/or beef
- Use with caution in patients with pheochromocytoma

- Tachyarrhythmias
- Administration and Dosage
- Hypoglycemia:
- Adult: 0.5-1.0 mg IM
- Peds: 0.25-0.5 mg IM
- Beta Blocker Overdose:
- Adult: 3-10mg IVP over 1 minute. May be followed by an infusion of 2-5 mg/hr.
- Peds: 0.1 mg/kg IVP over 1 minute, repeat in 5 minutes if needed.
- Anaphylaxis:
- Adult: 1-2 mg slow IVP, may repeated every 5-10 minutes.
- Peds: Rarely Indicated
