Morphine Sulfate

  1. Therapeutic Effects
    1. CNS Depressant
    2. Peripheral Vasodilation
    3. Narcotic Analgesic

  2. Indications
    1. Chest pain refractory to oxygen and NTG
    2. Pain from isolated burns (IV Only)
    3. Pulmonary Edema associated with CHF (ALS)
    4. Pain relief with isolated injuries during long transport

  3. Contraindications/Precautions
    1. Head Injury
    2. Volume Depletion
    3. Undiagnosed abdominal pain
    4. Hypersensitivity to drug
    5. Major/multisystem trauma

  4. Side Effects
    1. Decreased BP
    2. N/V and Dizziness
    3. Altered LOC
    4. Respiratory Depression

  5. Administration and Dosage
    1. Adult: 2-4 mg Slow IVP, repeat every 2/min until relief of pain or 10mg has been administered.
    2. Adult IM Dose: 5-10 mg
    3. Peds: 0.1-0.2 mg/kg IV
    4. Naloxone for MS Overdose
