Oxytocin (pitocin)

1. Therapeutic Effects
   1. Produces uterine muscle and blood vessel contraction.

2. Indications
   1. Post-Partum hemorrhage uncontrolled by other methods, after deliver of baby and placenta.

3. Contraindications/Precautions
   1. Extreme caution in patients with previous Cesarean section or uterine surgery.
   2. Monitor vital signs, ECG and uterine contractions constantly.
   3. Do not administer prior to the delivery of the placenta.
   4. Utilize uterine massage and baby to breast before considering pitocin.
   5. Uterine effect with pitocin occurs within 1 minute and lasts up to 30 minutes after the infusion is discontinued.
   6. Consider rapid transport.

4. Side Effects
   1. Hypotension, tachycardia.
   2. Anaphylaxis (rare).
   3. Cardiac arrhythmias.

5. Administration and Dosage
   1. 10 U in 1000 ml. Run at less than 30 mini drops per minute.
