ALS MEDICATION
Oxytocin (pitocin)
- Therapeutic Effects
- Produces uterine muscle and blood vessel contraction.
- Indications
- Post-Partum hemorrhage uncontrolled by other methods, after deliver of baby and placenta.
- Contraindications/Precautions
- Extreme caution in patients with previous Cesarean section or uterine surgery.
- Monitor vital signs, ECG and uterine contractions constantly.
- Do not administer prior to the delivery of the placenta.
- Utilize uterine massage and baby to breast before considering pitocin.
- Uterine effect with pitocin occurs within 1 minute and lasts up to 30 minutes after the infusion is discontinued.
- Consider rapid transport.
- Side Effects
- Hypotension, tachycardia.
- Anaphylaxis (rare).
- Cardiac arrhythmias.
- Administration and Dosage
- 10 U in 1000 ml. Run at less than 30 mini drops per minute.
