Insulin
- Therapeutic Effects
- Mediate glucose transport across cell membranes;
- Stops glycogenolysis
- Increase glycogen synthesis
- Suppress gluconeogenesis
- Suppress lipolysis.
- Indications
- Ketoacidosis with hyperglycemia.
- Contraindications/Precautions
- Allergy to component of drug.
- Side Effects
- Hypoglycemia.
- Electrolyte imbalances.
- Allergic reactions (manage as would any other allergic reaction).
- Administration and Dosage
- Will vary with patient, form of insulin, route of administration.
- Comes in various forms: Short, Intermediate, and Long acting as well as subtypes; Regular, Lente and NPH.
- Only Regular should be used IV. All may be given SQ.
