Insulin

1. Therapeutic Effects
   1. Mediate glucose transport across cell membranes;
   2. Stops glycogenolysis
   3. Increase glycogen synthesis
   4. Suppress gluconeogenesis
   5. Suppress lipolysis.

2. Indications
   1. Ketoacidosis with hyperglycemia.

3. Contraindications/Precautions
   1. Allergy to component of drug.

4. Side Effects
   1. Hypoglycemia.
   2. Electrolyte imbalances.
   3. Allergic reactions (manage as would any other allergic reaction).

5. Administration and Dosage
   1. Will vary with patient, form of insulin, route of administration.
   2. Comes in various forms: Short, Intermediate, and Long acting as well as subtypes; Regular, Lente and NPH.
   3. Only Regular should be used IV. All may be given SQ.
