1. Therapeutic Effects

• Sedation

2. Indications (EMS)

• sedation for certain procedures only. i.e. intubation.

3. Contraindications

• hypersensitivity
• should not be given during pregnancy because of possible toxic effects on the fetus.
• should not be given to patients with hypotension.
• should not be administered to patients in shock.

4. Precautions

• must have emergency airway equipment ready.
• more likely to cause respiratory depression, or respiratory arrest than Valium.
• continuously monitor vital signs.

5. Dosage

• 2 mg-4mg slow IV push. With on-line medical control. May repeat only with direct orders from on-line medical control.

• IV

7. Side Effects

• laryngospasm
• bronchospasm
• dyspnea
• respiratory depression and arrest
• drowsiness
• amnesia
• altered mental status
• bradycardia
• tachycardia
• PVC
• retching

8. Toxic Effects
• Potentiate CNS depression
